Colorful Interior Design
At Nectar and Nest Interiors, color is a big part of all of our designs. Whether it is an impactful pop in a clean, neutral space or a deep hue drenching a moody room, color is one of the best ways to bring personality and joy into your space. Just remember that the use of color should be intentional.
Where Do I Start?
Select colors that spark joy. If you aren’t sure where to start, Nectar and Nest Interiors founder and principal designer Kattia Easterly suggests looking in your closet. Most of us have certain articles of clothing that just make us feel good. Do your favorite pieces have anything in common - color family, print, texture? Do you find yourself drawn to beautiful coastal blues or rich jewel tones? Love pinks from blush to bubblegum? Is “golden hour” more than a time of day for you? Whatever shades you happen to be drawn to, they are probably great starting points for introducing color into your home. Other sources for color inspiration are nature, art, films, travel. . . have fun thinking about colors that make you happy!
What’s Next?
Next, think about cohesion. Pick colors that play well together, whether they are complimentary to create contrast and excitement or analogous for a harmonious, cohesive look. Make sure that nearby rooms flow well by picking a color to carry throughout an area of your home. We used green and blue to create a bright, cohesive look in a favorite design that carried the color story throughout the main floor of the home for a sophisticated, transitional feel.
Wallpaper, rugs, draperies, artwork, and upholstery fabrics can help create your color story when used well. In a recent project, Kattia selected a fabulous print wallpaper that featured dark blues, greens, gold, melon, and lemon yellow. In a fun, unexpected twist, she pulled the melon color from the wallpaper and used it on the ceiling in a shiny enamel. She carried the other colors into the next room with more focus on blue, yellow, and green in wallpaper and upholstery.
Is Color Drenching for Me?
Consider saturating a room with one color for visual impact. Painting walls, trim, bookshelves, and even the ceiling the same color can provide depth and sophistication. Colors like navy blue, forest green, and mocha brown give a luxurious, sophisticated vibe, while adding warmth and richness. Color drenching in lighter colors like sage green or sky blue can create a sense of tranquility and elegance.
Live Colorfully
Ultimately, we believe home design should reflect how you live and how you want to feel. The use of color can bring the outdoors inside, remind you of a favorite destination, or simply make you feel happy. At Nectar and Nest Interiors, we delight in bringing color to Atlanta home design.
